Western New England College, or WNEC, for short, is a private college in Springfield, which is the largest city on the Connecticut River, serving as the county seat of Hampden County, situated in the US state of Massachusetts, housing over 155 500 people, within its limits, as estimated during the 2009 census, which also makes it the largest city in the state and the 4th largest in New England.
WNEC was established in 1919 and first started as the Springfield Division of Northeastern College, known as Springfield-Northeastern, with the original mission to offer part-time educational opportunities for adult students in law, business, and accounting. Today, the college offers its students 40 undergraduate programs and graduate studies, which certificates, master's degrees, and a doctoral program in Behavior Analysis, through the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Business, School of Pharmacy, and School of Law.
WNEC's athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears, and they compete in NCAA Division III, in 14 sports, for both men and women.
Among WNEC's noteworthy alumni, there is Tim Murray (lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, as well as former mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts), Larry O'Brien (former U.S. Postmaster General, as well as a former National Basketball Association Commissioner), and Rodney Smith (won the bronze medal in the 68 kg division of the Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the 1992 Olympic Games and also competed in the 1996 Olympic Games).
